This paper discusses the medical/radiology screenings available to detect cancer. The trend today is to order cancer screening tests, based on age or on risks factors, but a recent report made by the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center says that these tests may not be the best for seniors or elderly persons (American Medical Association). Age, according to the report, is one of the most important factors to consider in ordering such tests. A patient with other illnesses and has only a life expectancy of five years will not benefit from a breast cancer screen test, for example, because patients do not benefit from screening for at least five years (AMA). They can suffer unnecessarily from discovering early cancer and undergoing surgery or another invasive treatments.

32 Candide - Life Is Worth Living.
Voltaire earned much fame and criticism at the same time for his powerful crusade against injustice and bigotry, expressed in brilliant literature. He went up against the government and the Catholic hierarchy, particularly because of the Grand Inquisition. His character, Candide, was very much patterned after his own personality and experience, but his character begins by believing in goodness as prevailing in the world and ends the same way, despite his (Voltaire's) deadly cynicism. His famous phrase, "the best of possible worlds," has been his landmark, and the question that follows is, "what then are the others?"

76 Sexual Discrimination in the Modern Workplace.
This paper is on sexual discrimination in the modern workplace. Among all industrialized nations, the United States has established the best system in preventing and combating sexual harassment incidents in the workplace. In 1980, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued guidelines affirming that sexual harassment in the workplace is a form of sex discrimination and imposing strict liability on employers for failing to take reasonable preventive or remedial measures. As of 1981, federal courts at every level have rendered decisions in a number of related cases, which are generally favorable to employees-complaints. Since the passage of Civil Rights Act of 1991, employer liability in the incidents of sexual harassment in the workplace has been increased considerably. Since sexual harassment in the workplace can cause various adverse effects to employees and directly impede the ideal of attaining gender equality in employment, it is of vital importance to pay close attention to the efforts made and the experience accumulated in this field by the United States.

94 Child Abuse In England.
This paper discusses child abuse in England. The bruises on Clara's upper arms are indicative of something serious (HMO 2001) that the health visitor, if she, indeed, has been seeing her for two and a half years, should have noted or anticipated. The account given is so scanty that the general information can hardly be gleaned. The other family members should have been asked or accounted for, even if the health visitor does not know the family very well. The barest family statistics could still have been obtained. Once the information is obtained, then a treatment plan must be made to determine the best methods to keep the child in the home if possible.

112 Southern Slavery.
The focus of this paper is on slavery. This is a tough subject with many burning issues stemming back from the early days of Southern slavery. Although always and inevitably tagged along with the burning issue of slavery in those years preceding the American Civil War, expanding American territory would redound to the best advantage of its people and further enhance its economic and political objectives and gains. The principle of manifest destiny could be invoked, whereby the people of those days had the power and duty "to overspread and to possess the whole of (the Northern American) continent, which Providence has given (them) for the development of the great experiment of liberty." This tenet, introduced and made popular by journalist John L. Sullivan in 1845, which maintained that it was the American nation's destiny as well as duty to conquer the West and to expand its limits "in the name of God, nature, civilization and progress."

131 Where Is Affirmative Action Today?
This body is about affirmative action in the workplace today. The purpose of affirmative action is to give our nation a way to finally address the systemic exclusion of individuals of talent, on the basis of their gender or race, from opportunities to develop, perform, achieve and contribute. Affirmative action is an effort to develop a systematic approach to open the doors of education, employment, and business development opportunities to qualified individuals who happen to be members of groups that have experienced long-standing and persistent discrimination. Expanding opportunity for people of color means expanding not only their access to existing jobs, education and housing , but also removing the obstacles that cause them from obtaining their goals. I believe, affirmative action is the best shot they have in order to achieve their dreams.
