What does the terms public interest mean? How does it affect different companies? If a child sees cereal with a toy in it, he/she will beg and cry until the mother buys the cereal. The mother may know this is not the "best interest" of the child because it lacks important vitamins or may be full of sugar. The commercial has placed value on knowing children will see the commercial and will talk their parents into buying it. The interest of the children is met, but not the "best" interest of the children.8 P

3614 The Blind Assassin: The Blind Are Free.
Atwood's novel, The Blind Assassin, is a novel of embedded stories, memoirs, newspaper clippings, a novel written by one of the characters, and stories told by a distant and secret relation within the family's daughters, Iris and Laura. Blindness is offered as a kind of purposeful ignorance, or a refusal to look at what is happening, and as well as a kind of freedom from the consequences of knowing what is happening. In the contexts of Iris' recollections, her family represents a Pandora's Box of secrets and betrayals, and as the novelist, Atwood is referring to the ways family secrets can destroy a family. The Blind Assassin is, however, much more than a story about secrets, but a revelation about writing, remembering, and living in the shadows of our own lives. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

3705 Theme and Genre in "Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger".
This paper will argue that the story "Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger" exhibits the generic conventions of vernacular stories. Its narrator functions like a popular storyteller, breaking into the action to comment or judge, and generally maintaining a chatty, oral folkstory tone within the form of a written text. However, as will be seen, in its theme interest the story also echoes the preoccupations of its era. Ming China in the seventeenth century was a world dominated by urban mercantile culture. Thus, even in a story of romance and love such as "Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger" there is a preoccupation with commerce and exchange, and even love is shown to have a price. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 1 source.
