5029 Who is the Colonizer? Who is the Colonized? Sally Potter and Postmodern Feminism.
This paper will argue that Tobin's critical analysis of Potter is valid. As the critical theory of Gayatri Spivak argues, Western feminism has often shared in the hegemonic project of Western culture with respect to peoples of the once-colonized world. However, as the site of Potter's project is the tango, it must be noted that this reading of Potter's film is rendered problematic. The tango, as will be seen, is a performance of gender and power that incorporates a complex array of race, class, and sex roles. Given that this array signifies a systematic and structural exploitation of women, Potter's subversion of this - although undeniably participating in colonialist exoticism - should not be condemned. 11 pgs. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
