2124 Strong Artificial Intelligence: A Functionalist Stance.
In Searles criticisms of Strong Artificial Intelligence many revelations appear. He quite handily dismisses the very Functionalist arguments supporting Strong Artificial Intelligence Firstly, the Systems Reply (Berkeley & M.I.T.) is discarded since the person is the system and still does not understand Chinese. Secondly, with The Robots Reply (Yale), Searle notes the weakness of the argument through its concession that cognition is not only about formal symbol recognition. Thirdly, The Brain Simulator Reply (Berkeley & M.I.T), is suggested to be weak since it needs for knowledge of how the brain works. Even so, the brain shall fire the wrong 'synapses' or causal and the production of intentional states. Finally The Combination Reply is of all three arguments supporting each other to conclude that artificial intelligence is possible. 6 pgs. 7 f/c. 1b.
David Rees examines the Cold War in the 1945-1965 period. He therefore especially focuses on the Korean War, which represented the main symbol of the containment doctrine. Rees explains why the United States created the policy of containment and what motivated the government to apply this policy to Korea. In 1950, the United States applied containment in Korea in order to repulse the North Korean military offensive across the 38th parallel. Rees goes into depth explaining why the United States decided to alter its objective from the containment of North Korea to its liberation from Communist rule. Overall, Rees gives a sympathetic portrayal of U.S. policy in the Cold War, arguing that the containment doctrine was justified. 5 pgs. 1 f/c. 3b.

3626 Book Review: "Farenheit 451" - The Ambiguous Fire As Imagery In "Fahrenheit 451".
This review of Bradbury's (1953) Fahrenheit 451 considers the ways the author uses fire as a symbol of both destruction and creation, as both the symbol of decay in a post-atomic society, and a symbol of salvation, a source of heat and light. It is the heat, and light of fire that changes the main character, Guy Montag, from a book-burner to a book-rebel, one who has seen enough of what fire can do to understand how fire represents the past, and the potential for a different future. In the end, Montag realizes it is not the fire itself that is destructive, but the hands the control what fires will be used for. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
