Voltaire earned much fame and criticism at the same time for his powerful crusade against injustice and bigotry, expressed in brilliant literature. He went up against the government and the Catholic hierarchy, particularly because of the Grand Inquisition. His character, Candide, was very much patterned after his own personality and experience, but his character begins by believing in goodness as prevailing in the world and ends the same way, despite his (Voltaire's) deadly cynicism. His famous phrase, "the best of possible worlds," has been his landmark, and the question that follows is, "what then are the others?"

115 Conversion.
This paper focuses on the lives, passions and destinies of Dorothy Day and Saint Augustine of Hippo have close resemblances and are strikingly parallel. They were both born into comfortably well-off families: Augustine's in Tagaste (a city in what is now Algeria), where his father was a city official; and Dorothy's in Brooklyn, New York. Both were in search of something they vigorously sought from their youth, and both had strong links with their parents: Augustine with his saintly mother, Monica, and Dorothy, with her father John Day. And both of them were endowed with the capability to achieve their pursuit: Augustine received a Christian education, although his father was baptized into Christianity only before his death; and Dorothy spontaneously found serenity and beauty in the desolate and drab streets of Chicago's south side at the time (Forest). Both possessed sharp intellect and unbreakable will. Even their timelines are parallel: Augustine was converted and baptized into Christianity when he was 33 years old and died when he was 76 years old (Knight); Dorothy was received into the Catholic Church at 30 years old and died at 75 (Forest).

122 Balkans.
This paper discusses the Balkans. The Turks' guiding principle was to raid, war against and make life miserable to the Christians in the interest of Islam. They belonged to the Byzantine Empire, the capital of which was Constantinople, the apple of the eye of the Turks, then headed by the prophet Muhammad. But it was not until the rule of Muhammad the Conqueror that this great ghazi or conquest was carried out. In 1453, Muhammad and his troops bombed the city walls of Constantinople for months, and having been so badly damaged, it did not take the Turks a day to capture it and destroy the last bit of it. Thus was how the misery of its Christian inhabitants, begun by the brutal siege, continued.

288 Sweat Shops in New York City.
This paper discusses sweatshops in New York City. Under the law, "sweatshops" are defined as those factories with more than one violation of federal or state laws protecting wages and safety. Authorities have found sweatshops in New York City that were cited for unsafe conditions such as exposed electrical wiring, blocked aisles, machinery lacking safety devices, as well as problems of poor heating, lighting, and ventilation. There have also been reports of widespread abuses of minimum wage and overtime pay in sweatshops because owners know undocumented workers won't complain. New York City is one of the worst culprits of sweatshop crimes.

313 Ford, Mass Production, and the Auto Industry.
This paper discusses Henry Ford, mass production and the auto industry. The Model T put America on wheels, but the real revolution was the production technique developed in 1913. Ford Motor Co.'s moving assembly line, and the rapid spread of its mass-production methods, kicked the industrialization of America into overdrive and profoundly changed the way people work and live worldwide. The debate over whether the introduction of the assembly line was more a blue ribbon day for American industry, or a dark day for the American blue-collar worker, will rage on for years to come. But one thing is certain: Henry Ford's vision changed the way people thought about production, as well as the way things were made and the way people worked.

427 Socrates and his Explanation of Moral Character and Harm.
This study guide shows that Socrates cannot be guilty of harming youth because his intentions are pure and honesty cannot harm. It also supports Socrates' argument that God has sent him to do specific work and tell the truth. He cannot be harmed by his death because of his purity. The author concludes that those of moral character cannot be harmed even by death. A very basic explanation of the ancient argument. Is there a clear relationship between morality and harm? Is there a relationship between moral character and harm? Socrates believed that there was and he used this relationship to show that he could not be guilty of "corrupting youth " (24c) or "generalized meddling" (25a) with the people of the city of Athens. Even placed on trial for his life he was not willing to waver in his position or to accept a lower moral standard because this moral standard would cause him harm.
