143 The Mystery of the Universe "Its Stars and Planets".
Scientific discoveries and tools have changed our knowledge of the universe over the years. With astronomers past and present, we have learned about the planet Earth, our Sun, and the planets that surround. This paper details the history of astrology, prominent astronomers, and the solar system. Early Greek astronomers knew many of the geometrical relationships of the heavenly bodies. Some, including Aristotle, thought Earth was a sphere. Eratosthenes, born in about 276 BC, demonstrated its circumference. Hipparchus, who lived around 140 BC, was a busy and talented astronomer. He classified stars according to brightness, estimated the size and distance of the moon, found a way to predict eclipses, and calculated the length of the year to within 6 1/2 minutes. As we can see, scientists and the advancements in technology have played a major and profound part in our knowledge today of the universe we live in. If it weren't for astronomers of past and present and their desire to learn just what is out there, we would have very little information about our world and beyond.

314 Hero Worship: The Good News and The Bad.
The focus of this paper is the sports hero in the American Culture. The days of Americans worshipping athletes like "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio, and "Broadway" Joe Namath appear to be over, right? Well, not quite. Attendance numbers, television ratings and merchandise sales are at an all-time high in the sports industry. Fantasy sports leagues and home video games in which fans can manage or even be their favorite players are wildly popular with fans of all ages. And perhaps the most upsetting indication that hero worship is alive and well, is the fact that increasing numbers of young athletes are bypassing college in order to achieve their dream of playing professional sports. In turn, sports heroes themselves are getting younger and younger. In the following pages, I will discuss these disturbing trends more closely, by tracing their roots, examining the present state of affairs, and predicting the future of the sports hero.

443 The Death Of A President From A Seven Year Old's Viewpoint.
An American tells his reaction to the murder of President Kennedy when he was seven years old. "President Kennedy has been shot and we don't know if he'll survive." Suddenly, she had the attention of every second grader in the class. She continued, "Class will dismissed as soon as the busses arrive." When I got home my mother was glued to Chet Huntley's news bulletin on our black and white television. Black and white television seemed to accentuate the gloominess of the event. The news report kept replaying the events of the assassination attempt.

447 The Development of the Piano and Correcting It's Tuning Problems.
This paper discusses the development of the piano as a musical instrument. Strictly technical, it provides information on strings, tuning, and development difficulties. It begins in 500 BC and examines development issues through the 1700's. From the earliest times man has surrounded himself with music. His simplest instrument was his voice, with which he could communicate with other men, but as society developed so did a variety of musical instruments. Experimentation and development of musical instruments continued through time and found its way into the Greek culture. Pythagoras, who lived about 500 B.C., began the first experiments with relationships between various musical tones (Jackson 3).

547 An Analysis of Love.
This paper examines love. The Ancient Greek playwright, Sophocles, wrote, "One word frees us of all the weight and pain in life. That word is love." Surely, Sophocles is not alone in his optimistic belief that love, in its purest form, is capable of healing all the world's ills. Others, however, might argue that love itself is responsible for those same ills, and that were it not for love, there would be no reason for hate. Indeed, for every poem, story, or play in which love saves the day, there is a counter perspective in which love manifests itself only as heartache, lament and despair. What is love and is it worth it?
