This paper is on the history of the state of Virginia. In early 17th century, a book inspired by Sir Walter Raleigh and written by Richard Hakluyt, entitled "Western Planting," built up great interest in American colonization. Focus of commercial explorations was possible trade with the East India Company for the West. The King of England formed and granted a royal charter to the London Company and the Plymouth Company (Interesting.com) to found a colony. In December 1606, the London Company, led by Captain Christopher Newport, reached a town and named it Jamestown, after the King of England. It was the first permanent settlement in North America, the whole of which was then Virginia. The first settlers in this new land consisted of 12 laborers, a few carpenters, a blacksmith, a mason, a barber and a tailor and 50 other men.

314 Hero Worship: The Good News and The Bad.
The focus of this paper is the sports hero in the American Culture. The days of Americans worshipping athletes like "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio, and "Broadway" Joe Namath appear to be over, right? Well, not quite. Attendance numbers, television ratings and merchandise sales are at an all-time high in the sports industry. Fantasy sports leagues and home video games in which fans can manage or even be their favorite players are wildly popular with fans of all ages. And perhaps the most upsetting indication that hero worship is alive and well, is the fact that increasing numbers of young athletes are bypassing college in order to achieve their dream of playing professional sports. In turn, sports heroes themselves are getting younger and younger. In the following pages, I will discuss these disturbing trends more closely, by tracing their roots, examining the present state of affairs, and predicting the future of the sports hero.

443 The Death Of A President From A Seven Year Old's Viewpoint.
An American tells his reaction to the murder of President Kennedy when he was seven years old. "President Kennedy has been shot and we don't know if he'll survive." Suddenly, she had the attention of every second grader in the class. She continued, "Class will dismissed as soon as the busses arrive." When I got home my mother was glued to Chet Huntley's news bulletin on our black and white television. Black and white television seemed to accentuate the gloominess of the event. The news report kept replaying the events of the assassination attempt.

712 Gallup Polls.
The recent Gallup Poll conducted implies that Americans are not particularly excitable with the new round of cuts. With less than a third believe they will help the economy, the public seems to be thoroughly divided as to whether the cuts are a honest or serious idea. Such doubt demands a political response and it is no accident that the news is now dominated by talk of numerous economic stimulus packages being offered by the Bush administration and by Democrats in Congress. And it is here that the disconnection between the Bush administration and the public really comes to the proceeding.

776 The effects of the media on terrorism
The phrase "terrorism" can be seen, read or heard today just about everyplace in media, regardless of whether international or local, ready to be listened to by news consumers. It also lies in wait of numerous writer or editor working in an international political panorama reversed by the September 11 attacks in the United States. The word terrorism both its technical meaning and the political baggage that comes with it is an editorial minefield for journalists, various of whom are trying to find their way to impartial, perceptive reporting in a world that, shaken by events like that of September 11, are increasingly dictated to by the language and representation of terrorism.
