100 The Real And The Unreal In The Scarlet Letter.
This paper examines the characters in The Scarlet Letter. As real people often are in actual life, Hawthorne's three main characters - Dimmesdale, Chillingworth and Hester Prynne - are not in their inner world as they seem in the outside world. The two men, at least, have inner agendas they need to camouflage externally. On the other hand, Hester, despite the honesty, humility and penitence with which she accepts the censure and abominations of the people, remains unreadable to them in her unbroken silence as to her secret lover is and all the thoughts and feelings that nestle and wrestle within her and behind the scarlet letter on her chest.

314 Hero Worship: The Good News and The Bad.
The focus of this paper is the sports hero in the American Culture. The days of Americans worshipping athletes like "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio, and "Broadway" Joe Namath appear to be over, right? Well, not quite. Attendance numbers, television ratings and merchandise sales are at an all-time high in the sports industry. Fantasy sports leagues and home video games in which fans can manage or even be their favorite players are wildly popular with fans of all ages. And perhaps the most upsetting indication that hero worship is alive and well, is the fact that increasing numbers of young athletes are bypassing college in order to achieve their dream of playing professional sports. In turn, sports heroes themselves are getting younger and younger. In the following pages, I will discuss these disturbing trends more closely, by tracing their roots, examining the present state of affairs, and predicting the future of the sports hero.

Like any romantic human relationship, Lopez' relationship with nature, and specifically the people, animals and landscape of the North American Artic, encompasses a wide range of feelings and emotion; including love, admiration, respect and an overwhelming desire to learn about and become a part of the place of which he is so enamored.

1588 Mass Media and the (De)Construction of Modern Society.
This paper argues that the modern mass media has played a significant role in shaping modern society. It has altered the power structure of modern society by redefining, largely through the influence of advertising - the keystone of mass media - the citizen into a consumer. This paper is convincingly written and provides excellent insight into the various subtle sales methods used by advertisers in all forms of media: television, radio, movies, and magazines. When popular media culture is viewed as a socializing force, as opposed to the more benign interpretation of it as an "objective" medium devoid of ideological or political content, one may get some appreciation of the potential of its totalizing power to insert messages into various media. 10 pgs. 10 f/c. 6b.
