This paper discusses technology and the disabled. In the past those with disabilities were unable to do as many activities and work as they are now able to do. The federal government requires that there be no discrimination concerning the disabled person; however, there are discrimination practices. The public society still stigmatizes different disabilities. It is for this reason that technology is a wonderful step for the disabled, but it does not open up all the doors to be able to be independent in all aspects of the society. One of the problems with the disabled that technology cannot change is the attitude of others who not have disabilities. There are still many doors that need to be changed for those with disabilities, but technology is opening doors for many. Education is the key to help the disabled to have a better quality of life.

813 Pros and Cons of Inclusion of Disabled Students
This paper discusses children and disabilities. According to the U.S. Department of Education's Seventeenth Annual Report to Congress (1995), more than 2.4 million children with learning disabilities (LD) received special education services in our nation's schools during the 1993-94 school year. For educators, understanding the special learning needs of a student with a learning disability plays a critical part in designing an appropriate educational program for that student and in providing needed educational and behavioral support. Information on the many instructional practices and accommodations that have proven effective with students with LD can also help educators maximize these students' possibilities of academic, social, and behavioral success.

2832 Book Review: Michael Grant's Cleopatra.
Michael Grant's Cleopatra is an interesting read both in terms of subject matter and style. Cleopatra was a powerful woman who, while reigning in Alexandria, Egypt, had affairs with Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. Traditional history has tended to superficially dismiss her as a powerful seductress. While Grant's book is written in an academic style, it helps debunk the common misperception regarding Cleopatra and demonstrates that she was a skilled administrator who attempted to salvage Egypt from Roman domination. 4.5 pgs. 0 f/c. 1b.

2855 The American Disabilities Act and the "Total Institution": How Colleges Aid Disabled Athletes.
This paper shall address the topic of inter-collegiate athletics in relation to the ADA. The main points that will be examined are the ADA in relation to physical disabilities and inter-collegiate athletics, the ADA in relation to mental disabilities and inter-collegiate athletics, and how the inclusion of disabled students in inter-collegiate athletics is affecting the performance of the teams. It is hoped that this examination of the ADA in relation to inter-collegiate athletics will help to demonstrate how the ADA is affecting sports performance in American collegiate athletics. 8 pgs. 12 f/c. 10b.

3294 A Critical Reading of Connie Panzarino's "The Me in the Mirror".
Connie Panzarino's "The Me in the Mirror", an autobiographical account of her life as a writer and activist born with a rare disease known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy, is an inspiring story of one woman's struggle for survival and achievement. However, from the point of view of women's and disability studies, inspirational studies are not by themselves particularly significant. This paper will argue that what renders Panzarino's work noteworthy to students and professionals in this field is her repeated transgressing of societal taboos surrounding women and disability. As will be seen, Panzarino's focus on her body as a site of resistance - in particular, her assertion of her sexuality as a disabled woman - informs her theoretical critique of the associated constructs of patriarchy, ableism, racism and homophobia. 5.5 pgs. 7 f/c. 2b.

3314 A Critical Reading of Anne Finger's "Past Due: A Story of Disability, Pregnancy and Birth".
Anne Finger's memoir "Past Due: A Story of Disability, Pregnancy and Birth" represents a classic example of the feminist principle that "the personal is political". Her account of her life as a feminist, disability activist and campaigner for reproductive freedom, and the story of her giving birth to a potentially disabled child, may be read on a superficial level as an exercise in autobiography. However, as this review will argue, it would be more accurate to read Finger's memoir as part of a feminist project to represent the convergence of the personal and political in contemporary feminism, and thereby resist those forces that would label, categorize and dehumanize women, the disabled and the marginalized. 7 pgs. 11 f/c. 1b.
