This paper is a detailed history and a predicted future of California's energy crisis. California's partially deregulated electric power industry has problems. Originally intended to reduce retail prices of electricity and improve the reliability of its delivery, the steps taken in California seem to have failed to meet both of these objectives. San Diego consumers' electricity bills soared beginning last summer as the rate freeze instituted as part of the state's deregulation plan came to an end for San Diego Gas and Electric Company (SDG&E) customers. Further north, rolling blackouts in California have left many businesses and homes without power for short periods, due to a shortage of power.

631 Argentina Financial Crisis.
Argentine president la Rua faced the most powerful general strike against his center-left administration. Argentina's embattled President Fernando de la Rua resigned following street protests. The main reason behind De la Rua resignation is the failure to bring stability, reducing unemployment, curbing down the unequal distribution of wealth, and failure to reduce corruption. It was these measures that set off the rioting that led to De la Rua's resignation. Protesters rallied outside De la Rua's presidential palace where riot police on horseback repeatedly pushed them back with batons, water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets. Hundreds were taken into custody. Reports of the number of dead range anywhere from six to thirty people killed since the riots began.

875 Emergency Rooms Crisis
This paper discusses the observation of an emergency room crisis and observation of a woman's shelter for domestic violence. Often observations are used in the study of science and psychology. A person can learn a lot from observation. The elderly, a little boy, and an ambulance are part of the observation of the emergency rooms crisis. The Moss House is a shelter for women who have been domestically abused and have no place to go. After explaining my assignment, they give me special permission to visit during one of their meetings. The shelter is large with several rooms upstairs and several downstairs. The meeting room is in the dining area.

1613 The South East Asian Currency Crisis.
This study will probe at the causes and likely consequences of the ongoing Southeast Asian crisis that began in the second quarter of 1997. Though the situation is still unfolding and surely will continue to for many years to come it can confidently be said that this is the worst economic crisis the world has experienced since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Until very recently, most analysts had confined the crisis to Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand. Some obdurate analysts even continue to suggest that the Asian 'miracle' is still far from over! These, and many other predictions that the crisis would result in only a short, sharp downturn with almost no impact on the major capitalist countries, have all proved to be wrong. Severe economic crisis in Japan along with economic slowdown in China, currency lows in Canada, South Africa, Mexico and many other countries, and the finale of the stumbling American economy, do clearly suggest that the crisis is endemic to the entire global system. This is an ugly and painful realization, but it is indeed reality. Not only does it seem that the Asian miracle is surely over, but that the burgeoning global economy is headed for a drastic slowdown. 7.5 pgs. 16 f/c. 5b.

1700 The Security Treaty Crisis of 1960.
Most Japanese that grew up after the 1970s are not even aware of the struggles that were experienced before them. The same can be said for the study of post-war Japanese history. The lion's share of research has been on the Japanese economic 'miracle', and relatively little has been mentioned of the post war hardships. This paper marks an effort to shift this balance. It will explore the so-called security treaty crisis of 1960 between the US and Japan and pay particular attention to the social effects on Japan. To provide an understanding of the situation the origins of the crisis will be elaborated. Here, in addition to the domestic situation in Japan, the entire international scene must be looked at, as this was a critical time in the unfolding of the cold war. After setting this stage, the remainder of the paper will focus on the impact and importance of the crisis and the longer-term effects on Japan. 11.5 pgs. 15 f/c. 6b.

1804 The Roots of the South East Asian Crisis.
This paper will probe at the causes and likely consequences of the ongoing Southeast Asian crisis that began in the second quarter of 1997. Though the situation is still unfolding-and surely will continue to for many years to come-it can confidently be said that this is the worst economic crisis the world has experienced since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The evidence presented in this paper will fortify arguments through a synthesis of the available research in the area, along with some independent conjecture where appropriate. As a crisis 'in progress', it is both unwise and impossible to provide any definitive conclusions. There are evident themes and concrete examples, nevertheless, that do help shed light on this very perplexing dilemma. 22 pgs. 42 f/c. 18b.
