3675 Book Report: The Red Badge of Courage - American Realism in a Post-Photographic Age.
Stephen Crane produces an innovative style of writing in Red Badge of Courage, one that works to provide the reader with an immediate and realistic experience of the American Civil War. By placing the reader into a smaller scene of reality, through the eyes of one young soldier, Crane is able to heighten the sensory experience, and describe scenes of battle with vivid imagery that conveys both the chaos and savagery of war. As a technique, Crane's writing scripted images into photographic fragments that most closely resemble the individual's own sensory experience, thus making the soldier's experience one of greater reality than other war narratives of this era. 5 pgs. 102 Mother Courage.
This paper focuses on Mother Courage and Her Children. Nothing tests our mettle better than adversity, and there is no adversity greater and more trying than war. This appears to underlie Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, which is sharply and precisely set against the Thirty Years' War in certain parts of Sweden in 1624 and thereafter. Mother Courage's valor and grit in nurturing her children and sustaining them by keeping her selling business hefty or surviving have been told and re-told, but the undertones never wear out and continue to reverberate how this brave mother- woman- person's instinct to survive leads her to be more than herself in each stroke of tragedy.

297 The Thin Red Line A Novel by James Jones.
This is a book report of James Jones's "The Thin Red Line." This book is not about men at war as much as it is about war in men. It is about war alright...a war with fear for some, with jealousy for another, a war with death for another, war with faith for yet another. Every one of those C-for-Charlie company has a war...not only with the unseen Japs and their deadly hidden machine guns...but also with themselves. In order to win the war with the outside enemy, they have to win a war with the inside enemy, the humanity in them, and they must lose the war against the animal in them... The story has its share of tactics and warfare...but its main concern is with the men at this war...and the war in these men. To say that this book is outstanding is an understatement.

409 An Analysis of Red Harvest.
This paper discusses the surrealistic world that Dashiell Hammett creates in his novel, Red Harvest, is a world in which it is difficult to know what or who to believe. It is a world in which the wisest of characters might heed the advice, "Don't believe anything that you hear, and only half of what you see". Throughout Hammett's book runs the fear that nothing can be taken at face value, and nothing is what it appears to be. This fear culminates in a suspicion not only of individual people but also of the social order itself. The streets of Personville can be likened to a stage on which gangsters masquerade as businessmen, capitalists contract with criminals, and no one can tell the difference between them.

778 'To Kill A Mockingbird'
In the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are two families that are very different and are case of totally contrasting on the moral ladder of attainment. The Cunninghams and the Ewells have two very different and opposite standing. The Cunninghams are very highly regarded while the Ewells very much slighted. The Ewells are given the right to hunt out of season, so that the inhabitants of the small town of Maycomb would not have to tolerate their uninterrupted begging all the time. It is a story about growing up, dignified behavior and prejudice. It is a story about audacity and grit. Courage is mental or moral strength to venture, persist and confront hazard, alarm, or exigency. The topic of courage is incarnated in the characters of the novel. Courage is evident in Atticus, Boo, and Jem. From beginning to end in the novel, the actions and feelings these characters demonstrate exhibit the true meaning of courage.
