193 The ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) Today.
Proposed in 1950, the ECSC was created as a way to pool coal and steel resources by providing a unified market for coal and steel products, lifting restrictions on imports and exports, and creating a unified labor market. Annual reports show that European coal production is expected to continue its downward trend in the face of competition from international coal and other energy sources. Founded in the early 1950s, the ECSC was the forerunner of the present European Union. The ECSC treaty is due to run out in the year 2002, and the unions are calling for its renewal. "They are particularly concerned to see its important social provisions maintained" (Columbia Encyclopedia). These center on retraining and other measures to cushion the impact of job losses in the mining and steel sectors. So far, the measures have been financed by a levy on coal and steel production.

1922 Semantic and Episodic Memory.
Some people can remember poems they learned in school fifty years ago but continually forget where they put their car keys. While we might think of memory as a giant pool into which we dip for all the information we need--a pool that gradually drains as we get older--researchers have discovered that we may have two types of memory, each performing a different function. One is semantic, or fact, memory and the other is episodic, or event, memory. This paper discusses the two types of memories in semantic and episodic memory. 2 pgs. 1 f/c. 1b.

2979 Looking At Today's Stock Market: Trying to Make Sense of Tomorrow's.
Is there any quantitative rationale for stocks that trade with such astronomical values? This paper will explore this last question by applying time series and random walk analysis. In the final analysis, it will be clear that time series data has little if any ability to predict short term returns. Interestingly, the paper also finds that new economy stocks (such as Yahoo and AOL) clearly do not exhibit signs of a random walk, but older economy stocks like Coca Cola and Proctor and Gamble may. It is clear that the more companies are linked to the new, information based economy, the less their stocks exhibit sings of a random walk. 12.5 pgs. 9 f/c. 7b.

4449 Eyes Wide Shut: Kyoto, Canadian Environmental Policy, and the Technical Lens.
This paper will argue that Kyoto demonstrates the necessity of addressing the issue of global climate change with our eyes focused on realistic solutions that acknowledge the tendency of parties to cheat or avoid ratifying the Kyoto protocol given the size of the economic incentives at stake. Thus, through an analysis of the "lens" approach to environmental policy, it will be argued that the "technological lens" - although not ideal - is the best approach to this problem presently available. 6 pgs. 16865 Gender Differences in Awareness of Disabilities
In this study we used 70 students to test the difference between the way male and female students understand and explain their disabilities. Since our test pool does not contain any known members with actual disabilities, we created a placebo pool. The way we assessed how the students characterized their disabilities is by using the Academic Attributional Style Questionnaire (AASQ). We did this by gathering the explanatory style scores of 38 persons with a placebo disability (PWPD) and 32 persons not placebolly disabled (PNPD).
