This paper discusses the role of immigrant natives in American literature. Willa Cather's "O Pioneers!" addresses precisely the imbalance and uneasiness between the individual and society, which prevailed in America during the first Puritan settlement. The personal went against what was public, and the individual dream was at variance with the American Dream. Cather shows the struggle of individual potency against the external forces of history and the universe.

204 Fathers and Sons in Literature.
In literature, fathers were seldom portrayed as real people capable of making major contributions to their children's development. Only when there was paternal absence, neglect, abuse, or other overtly negative dynamics was father's influence likely to be stand out. We will see that Barn Burning is actually the story of an initiation that will lead to the boy's final refusal to help and support his father. By denouncing this one, Sarty will claim his own individuality and will gain his independence and freedom. The opposition of sharecropper (Mr. Snopes) and aristocrat (Mr. de Spain) suggests social implications. Several elements refer to this possibility. The father points out that de Spain's house is built with "nigger sweat" as well as the white sweat of the sharecropper. He seems to view himself as a victim of an unfair socio-economic system: he "burns with a ravening and jealous rage."(P.169), he is the "element of fire", the narrator speaks to "some deep mainspring" of Mr. Snopes being "as the element of steel or powder spoke to other men, as one weapon for the preservation of integrity ...used with discretion."

413 Women in Literature.
This paper discusses the role of women in literature. By the Modernist period, the roles of women, in works of literature, as well as in life, were changing. Whereas in Romantic or Victorian literature the female characters had mainly served as background players or love interests, they were now being portrayed as complete human beings with thoughts and agendas beyond those of the dutiful wife or fair maiden. As a result of this female empowerment, the men in modernist literature found their roles changing as well. This metamorphosis is played out in Henrik Ibsen's, "A Doll's House", in which the character of Nora Helmer spends the first two acts doing her best to keep up appearances as the ever respectful wife, but by the end of the play, has had her modernist "moment of epiphany" and claims her independence, while her husband is left with the children and his head in his hands.

667 Comparison Of Different Literature.
This paper compares Gilgamesh and Odyssey, and then Buddah-Karita and Mohammed. Both stories reflect how their gods could be manipulated for their own purposes. Their story is similar to our lives today in that we rely upon others for help. Odyssey and Gilgamesh used people to get their needs met in the story. In Mohammed the young men respect and listen to Mohammed, while in Odyssey the young men wanted to marry Penelope. Odyssey seems to be a story of victory and peace at the end. Mohammed died and continues to live on with the Moslem belief. Odyssey is a story of love and conquering. Mohammed is a story about a religion that many continue to belief.

1527 Individuals and Responsibility in American Literature.
This paper examines how America is founded on a spirit of independence. A war was fought for it, and even the Civil War might be seen in part as an effort to preserve the independent culture of the South from the industrial tyranny of the North. Certainly, American literature is littered with the independent hero and movies and have recently taken up the theme with gusto. The notion of independence, however, is often wedded to the notion of responsibility. Authors like Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Thoreau and Hawthorne have all explored the idea of individualism as it relates to notions of responsibility. 3.5 pgs. 0 f/c. 0b.
