244 Noise Pollution In The Workplace: Implementing An Effective Hearing Conservation Program.
This paper discusses the problems of noise pollution in the workplace. Occupational-related hearing impairment is a socioeconomic hazard to the workforce. In addressing the economic and social costs, the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (1997) found that these costs include, "not only financial compensation or damages that must be paid, and the reduced enjoyment of everyday life for those with a hearing loss, but also less quantifiable factors such as reduced productivity, increased stress, disturbed speech communication and risk of accidents for a large number of workers" (p.203).

489 Myths of Working.
This essay describes the primary myths of working and the false beliefs about employment in America. America is founded on a work ethic: "work hard and ye shall prosper." However, the work ethic is not the great key to success and personal growth that it is touted to be. Often work is drudgery people cannot escape; little more than a mechanism of survival with no hope for the future, but the myths about working continue to perpetuate themselves. Why do these myths continue? There are many possible answers, but the most likely is the simple survival of the society and a reason for the worker to get up in the morning. If the average worker recognized the myths associated with work he probably would not move much farther than the remote control for the television or the distance from the front door to the mailbox to pick up a welfare check. However, for the time being, work myths reign supreme and the same basic false ideals remain strong and the working society will probably continue to perpetuate these ten basic myths for some time to come.

1568 The Abolition of Slavery in Brazil 1880's to 1890's.
The Law of 13 May 1888 abolishing slavery without compensation was the death blow to many plantation owners from Rio de Janeiro who had held a large number of slaves during a period of economic squeeze suffered severely in regions such as Rio de Janeiro. Abolition hastened the collapse of the Empire and the establishment of the Republic. Abolition, without compensation for the slave owners, led to traditional supporters from the planter classes in Rio de Janeiro abandoning the emperor and joining with republican planters from Sao Paulo. Brazilian abolition of slavery in 1888 was not followed by systematic efforts to improve the lot of former slaves.
