This paper is a biography of William Shakespeare. He may be lauded as the author of popularly admired literature done by any individual in the history of Western civilization. (Grolier 1996) He may be the most influential writer in all of English literature or the most important dramatis and poet of the English Renaissance. (Spark notes) But William Shakespeare will still be, to most, the greatest playwright of all time. He was, in fact, a public and critical success (Spark Notes) in the field of theater, particularly as a favorite of both Elizabeth I and James I who reigned in succession (1558- 1603 and 1603-1625, respectively), King James granting Shakespeare's company with the royal status as king's players. For this, Shakespeare was immensely popular and wealthy till his death in 1616, but such popularity cannot compare with that which has survived him today and not just in England, but also throughout the world.

47 Death In Venice.
This paper is on Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice." It is an exposition of his own life experience, his response to certain incidents, secret longings and the extremes of those longings. His main character, Gustav von Aschebach, was himself, a prolific writer of his time and a disciplined man. The elements of the novella and Mann's life - the events in Aschenbach's sojourn in Venice, his weariness and self-restraint, the figuring of the young Tadzio, Aschenbach's overwhelming infatuation with Tadzio, the abandonment of his moral values and self-destruction -- are parallel, except in the end. The novella reveals Mann's homosexuality through Aschenbach's sensual fascination over Tadzio and the sublimation of that fascination into Platonic longing but overpowering, debilitating and even fatal, desire.

52 Insomnia.
This paper is on insomnia. Primary insomnia is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as the difficulty of initiating or maintaining sleep or sleep of the non-restorative type for at least a month.(Espie 2002) Insomnia is transient when it lasts only for a few days to a few weeks, as when some temporary event or physical condition is responsible, such as an illness, changes in sleeping environment, work or family stress or jet lag. The cause or causes will pass or can be disposed of directly but when the disorder occurs between a month and six months, it is called acute insomnia, and beyond six months, it is chronic. This type is distinguished from the "psychophysiologic insomnia in wakefulness, the circadian rhythm disorder in time alignment, the parasomnias and secondary insomnias.

129 A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures.
This is a book report on "A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures." A book about a newspaperman who wanted to make a presence in print. "Newsmakers are increasingly liars," the author states from the very beginning, and the CIA make a mess when they "try to make things happen." (Bradlee, 1995) These are strong statements, which seemed to be the thesis and central theme throughout the book. Many people would say the same thing about the press, too. Mr. Bradlee has lots of strong opinions about several different topics, but pay attention because they sometimes change. It is odd that Bradlee never blames the press itself for the growth of the celebrity culture that he laments. But he brags about wanting anyone and everyone to talk about his paper. I enjoyed this book for it's look inside the life of a journalistic, but I believe another book could have done it without all the frills.

177 Davidson and the Existence of Conventional Language.
This paper is written about Donald Davidson and the existence of conventional language. In his essay "A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs," Davidson defends the highly controversial thesis that 'there is not such a thing as a language, not if a language is anything like what many philosophers and linguists have supposed' and that 'we should give up the attempt to illuminate how we communicate by appeal to conventions'. It falls beyond the scope of this paper to evaluate Davidson's arguments for this thesis. Its point will be to defend the plausibility of its conclusion against the widely held view that the rejection of languages is clearly false, or even absurd.

188 Poe's Unity Theory.
This paper will discuss Edgar Allan Poe's unity of effect. This paper will also illustrates this theory in the works, "The Pit and the Pendulum," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." Through this paper, it will be known how this great writer inspired unity throughout his works through the setting, character description and narration that is weaved through his works. His talent was strong enough to direct his life, yet the constant emphasis on ancient family and on rich and costly surroundings in his stories indicates that the expensive tastes nurtured in him when young never changed. His disappointment in love, the loss of a gentleman's estate and the constant recurrence of death in Poe's family undoubtedly heightened Poe's morbid preoccupation. His own vivid sense of the dramatic and his restless nature that craved excitement, account for the startling situations in his stories.

194 A New Plan for Education.
This paper asks the question: What is understanding? Through research and thought this paper will ponder a new idea of education and learning. Knowledge and skill have traditionally been the mainstays of American education. We want students to be knowledgeable about history, science, geography, and so on. We want students to be skillful in the routines of arithmetic, the craft of writing, the use of foreign languages. Achieving this is not easy, but we work hard at it. In the long term, education must aim for active use of knowledge and skill (Gifford, 1991). Students garner knowledge and skill in schools so that they can put them to work--in professional roles--scientist, engineer, designer, doctor, businessperson, writer artist, musician--and in lay roles--citizen, voter, parent--that require appreciation, understanding, and judgment. Yet rote knowledge generally defies active use, and routine skills often serve poorly because students do not understand when to use them. In short, we must teach for understanding in order to realize the long-term payoffs of education. (Baron, 1990).
