This paper is an autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa. Yukichi Fukuzawa was one of the first experts on the West in modern Japan, which evolved in the late 19th century. He was born into samurai families in feudal Japan, which knew no other system than the Bakufu military dictatorship or shogunate. Although his father died when Yukichi was still a small boy, he remembered his father's deep belief in the Confucian doctrine, which stressed honesty, serenity and avoidance of mercantilism or business cunning. That was his father's supposed ideal form of education for his children, because that was what he practiced passionately (Fukuzawa 1980).

36 Improved Education for Women.
This paper discusses the need for improved education for women. More and more women desired to be formally educated by the end of the 19th century. This led to the establishment of more and more colleges for women and the admission of women students. Comparatively, only 1/5 of resident college and university students were women in 1870, but this grew to 1/3 in 1900. By the start of the 20th century, women acquired 19% of all college degrees. In 1984, this figure rose to 49%, in the undergraduate and graduate levels (Compton's) - 49% in the master's level and 33% in the doctorate level. And in 1985, roughly 53% of all college students were women, a quarter of whom were over 29 years old. The struggle of a woman to achieve equal status with the man in education has been staggering and the price has been very high. Although notable victories have been made and significantly influenced the course of history and education, progress has remained slow and low, as the bias towards man continues to obstruct a woman's efforts towards equality. She can only endure and persist in the fight.

This paper answers three questions. Question one addresses Ferry's theory of civilization and his belief that there are inferior races, and he suggests that the superior races have a duty to make it all fit. The second question addresses the question on what is the Third Estate. The Third Estate is the work that sustains a society. The Third Estate is needed to complete a nation. The Third Estate is a little bit of everything, It's the land and the water; it's the people living under the common law of the nation; it's the hard work and labor that goes into maintaining the land; it's the laws of the countryside; it's the merchants that sell goods. The Third Estate is ominous; it's necessary to a nation. The third question is to pretend that you are Spencer. This is the part of the program that is most striking to me. The diffusion of education is at the heart of this matter. The hard-worked and overburdened are the most educated; while the under-utilized person who wants to be educated and wants to work is not being used at all.

Young African-Americans, especially males, face particularly acute and limited chances of succeeding in school, as they do socially, a lot they share with other under-served minority and poor populations (Bailey and Paisley). Statistics say that African-Americans account for only 17% of the total population of a typical school, yet they comprise 32% of all suspensions and 30% of all expulsions. There are also three times more African-American males in remedial or special education classes than their while male counterparts and only 8.4% of those in gifted and talented classes are African-American.

129 A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures.
This is a book report on "A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures." A book about a newspaperman who wanted to make a presence in print. "Newsmakers are increasingly liars," the author states from the very beginning, and the CIA make a mess when they "try to make things happen." (Bradlee, 1995) These are strong statements, which seemed to be the thesis and central theme throughout the book. Many people would say the same thing about the press, too. Mr. Bradlee has lots of strong opinions about several different topics, but pay attention because they sometimes change. It is odd that Bradlee never blames the press itself for the growth of the celebrity culture that he laments. But he brags about wanting anyone and everyone to talk about his paper. I enjoyed this book for it's look inside the life of a journalistic, but I believe another book could have done it without all the frills.

Affirmative action is an effort to develop a systematic approach to open the doors of education, employment, and business development opportunities to qualified individuals who happen to be members of groups that have experienced long-standing and persistent discrimination. Expanding opportunity for people of color means expanding not only their access to existing jobs, education and housing , but also removing the obstacles that cause them from obtaining their goals. I believe, affirmative action is the best shot they have in order to achieve their dreams.
